Welcome to Helenonearth's photo gallery! My often low-res photos capture the feelings of sometimes unconventional moments from both my travels and experiences closer to home. Feel free to leave comments and share your thoughts on my images.
During the lockdowns of 2020-21, I explored my local cemetery in Bendigo and found twilight to produce the most spectacular and unexpected moments of light and colour.
During my school holiday break in September, 2019, I explored a town full of Abandoned Futuro Houses at Wanli, Taiwan.
In 2023, I explored the Druskininkai Pušynas hotel on a self-guided tour and was captivated by its curved, concrete pine cone design. Opened in 1982 as the SÅ«rutis Sanatorium, it’s a striking example of Socialist-modernist architecture and surprisingly easy to photograph even with an iPhone. Druskininkai, Lithuania; visit: 2023
Some photos have greater significance for their subject matter than for aesthetic qualities. In this image, the simplicity of the stick and pole washing line is juxtaposed against the 'Highest Point' sign, which for many is a menacing warning about the future of the island due to climate change. Tarawa, Kiribati, January, 2025
A small group of the 4,000-6,000 Buddha statues at Pak Ou cave, Laos. Whilst most photographers were aiming to lighten the Buddhas, I enjoyed their silhouetted forms against the stunning landscape background alongside the Mekong Delta. Visit: 2022
At the risk of appearing gimmicky, the pano function on an Iphone camera is often the best way to capture a wide building without a camera's wide angle lens. The patinated copper Postmodern facade of the new building of the Warsaw (Poland) University Library has eight panels, symbolizing pages of books with present fragments of texts. Visit: 2023
Favorite Photo
One of my favorite photos is of a man carrying a happy child through an archway at one of the madrasahs in Samarkand, Uzbekistan in 2024. I loved the silhouetted shape of the figures against the high key tone of the mosaic archway in the distance. I'm a fan of 'frame within a frame' which I have used here too. It perfectly encapsulates the joy of travel and the beauty of human connection against the backdrop of stunning architecture.
